Greg Lance was convicted in 2000 for a double homicide that took place in Cookeville, Tennessee, in August of 1998. With no physical or DNA evidence, the jury convicted him of two counts of premeditated murder and aggravated arson. Although Greg has remained consistent in claiming his innocence, he has been denied relief at every stage of the legal process.
Recently, Greg's story has been recognized by Sundance's It Couldn't Happen Here, hosted by Hilarie Burton. In Season 1, Episode 4, Hilarie covers Greg's story and talks to his family about their decades long fight.
"Our case in Tennessee from last year, Greg Lance, an innocent man in prison for a double homicide he didn't commit -- since the airing of our episode, two new people have come forward and signed affidavits saying, 'He didn't do it.'"
Following the airing of Greg's story on "It Couldn't Happen Here," a couple of witnesses came forward on Greg's behalf. One of the witnesses, Sam Horn's son, ultimately contacted Greg's lawyers and told them that his father had admitted to him that he had in fact killed the Kolesnikows.
Another witness to come forward was a friend of Sam's, Derrick Helms, who lived with Sam for a time following the murders. Derrick also told Greg's lawyers that Sam Horn had confessed to him that he had committed the murders.
On November 16, 2022, a hearing was held on Greg's Motions for both DNA and Fingerprint testing. The court granted both motions and the forensic testing of both items followed at the end of 2022 and into 2023.
The fingerprint testing was conducted by the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation and determined not to be Greg's prints. DNA samples were collected from the firearm and from Greg. After examination by both Guardian Forensic Services and Bode Technology, it was determined that while the DNA samples were from a male, Greg was not the contributor of the DNA on the firearm.
Upon the completion of the forensic testing and the filing of affidavits by the new witnesses, Greg's legal team filed an Amended Petition for Writ of Error Coram Nobis. This petition is scheduled to be heard on July 2nd and 3rd in Putnam County, Cookeville, Tennessee.
UPDATE
On July 2nd, Judge Don Ash held a hearing on the Amended Petition for Writ of Error Coram Nobis. The judge did not issue a ruling in court and has indicated that he will issue an opinion in approximately 90 days. Please continue to keep Greg and his family in your prayers.
